The Shoe On The Other Foot
How often do you get frustrated by people entering your contest or participating in your activity yet not following your rules? What do you do about it?
Most of us have been there - both, on the giving and receiving end. People tend to glance at rules rather than read them, thinking, it's not that hard to follow and fall in line. Truth is, it is. And for those who are running the activity or contest it becomes a nightmare. Do they ignore the fact that the participant went in a completely opposite direction and judge the written contests for its writing, or do they become that person people tend to avoid because they're being harsh?
Neither is easy. You reconsider your rules because hardly anyone follows them, or you decide to scrap the entire idea because you're tired of constantly nagging at the participants.
Whoever has had a contest or activity will tell you that it's not easy to deal with people who are ignorant when it comes to rules, but that you should stick with what you believe is right. Tell that particular person where they've gone wrong and hopefully they'll correct their mistake next time. If they keep doing it and are simply avoiding all your concerns, rules and regulations, you are free to simply exclude them from participating. It is you who runs it, it is you who makes the final decisions, which means you have the right to refuse them to enter - when enough is enough, you can simply draw the line.
Harsh, yes, but fair. If you're unwilling to participate by following the rules yet consistently come back for more and no amount of help can persuade you to change your writing attitude, then I don't see a reason why one couldn't exclude such a person from entering. It is also the last straw! I've never seen someone intentionally sabotage the rules just to make the judges mad.
And yet, I wonder why we do ignore the rules which are set right before us? Personally, I always glance at the rules, but then again I rarely enter any contests. Being made to write is not something I can do. It has to come to me, not be forced on me.
Rules are made for a reason - mostly as a writing exercise for you. Why not take that leap and follow them?
~ Gaby

From my previous Newsletter,

This could explain why I'm having troubling nailing down my novel idea... I want to make sure its right before I put forth the time commitment.
I've also just started my first contest here on WdC. So far its getting nice support... at least with donations. Still waiting for writers though. Holding my breath. I hope every one will check it out. "Invalid Item" I think the prompt will be a fun one regardless of your love of thrillers or not.
It's always nice to see a new contest take off. Hope you get a lot more entries, participants as well as donations. |
