Don’t know which mysteries are essential to read? Looking for a good mystery to keep you up at night? Look no further than our own Product Review Page.
Product reviews may be submitted by all Writing.Com members for books, DVDs, music, software, VHS videos and video games.
First, find the Author Tools pull down menu on the far left column. Click on the down arrow next to Author Tools to see the list of items available to you. Find the item called Create an Item and click on it. Next, you want to create a product review, so you need to click on the circle with the thumb pointing up that says Product Reviews in the Writing Non-Interactive section (at the top half of the page).
Once on the Create a Product Review page, you will see it is set up differently than other static item pages. The first thing you need to enter is the ASIN which is the Amazon.com Standard Item Number. Where can you find that?
I usually go to the Amazon.com site first, and find the book I am reviewing. Usually I can find the ASIN (which is the same as the ISBN for books) under the Product Details section on the listing, right after Language (usually the fourth listing down). Copy the ASIN (or ISBN) down and put it in the section asking for the ASIN.
Presto! You are on the main input page with (usually) a photo of the book cover you are reviewing. You will see a list of sections to fill out. This is where your reviewing and writing skills can shine through, where you can make the difference between someone wanting to read the book you are reviewing, or someone passing it up.
The first section is one where you rate the content of the book. Use the same guidelines we use to write our own materials. Then you need to rate the content of your review. More people will read your review if it is appropriate for all readers.
Now for the meat of the review. A Summary of the book begins your review. Decide how much you want to tell the reader about the plot. Try not to spoil the book for the reader by giving away the ending, or the solution to the mystery. I like to whet the potential reader’s appetite with a hook about the book.
The next section is This type of Book is Good for:Long trips? The Beach? Reading out loud to your children? Keeping you up at night? Be creative with the way you fill this section in.
I especially liked: and I Didn’t Like sections give you the chance to detail what you enjoyed or loathed in the book. It could be the style of writing, the plot, the characters, or even the book jacket!
When I finished the book I wanted to: section is another area you can be creative. Do you want to read more of the author’s work? Do you want to start a petition to ban the book? This Book made me feel section completes this area. Does the book make you feel angry? Confused? Did it make you fall asleep?
You can fill out the section The author of this book.. what.. Is a moron? Did her research? Is an expert in the field? and complete your review with the I recommend this book or I don’t recommend this book areas and your final comments.
The last thing to do is to rate the content of the different parts of the book using a five point system. The areas you will be looking at are the setting, story plot, characters, illustrations/photographs, author’s writing style, length of book, usefulness and overall quality.
Save your review and brag about it on the Plug Page or ask for a review of your review on one of our many review forums. I would like to see more quality product reviews here on site. Reviews serve two purposes; they are good vehicles to practice your writing, plus it helps members figure out what is available out there to read!

billwilcox: Schippers!
A great idea getting prompts from the newspapers. Of course the way the papers read these days everything you write would probably fall into the horror genre.
Yes, or maybe a GC topic!! Thanks for the kind words.
Deelyte- Chillin' : Great ideas to get some prompts for writing. Thanks for the reminder that there is a story to write in everyday things. Good job on the NL.
Thank you very much. I also pick my husband's brain for ideas!
DB Cooper :Dear Spectral,
Someone needs to research alledged Unabomber because Dr.K didn't have the brains to do it alone!
YOU do the research, write the story, and we can highlight in our Editor's picks section!
concrete_angel:This week's newsletter was amazing! I know exactly what you mean. My family must think I'm insane. I watch a movie, or hear something someone says--sometimes just a single word sparks a crazy idea. Thanks for a great newsletter!
Not insane, just creative!
I am offering a REVIEWING merit badge to the BEST (in my opinion) PRODUCT REVIEW for a mystery story! It must be a new review (written AFTER this newsletter) and you must let me know what you reviewed! (and I can find it in your port). GOOD LUCK!!
