Beliefs in Fiction

The addition of religion can add depth to your story.

Should you invent a new religion for your story or take an existing one?

When characters in fiction either have no religion or they follow one of the big religions, it creates an expectation in the reader based on their own relationship to the religion in question (or the lack of it.) When you read a book and the characters are involved in Christianity or Islam, you're immediately going to have a pre-fabricated view of that character. Your disposition toward that character will be colored by your view of their religion.

To free your character of those prejudices, you can either not mention their religion, make them atheist (comes with it's own prejudices), or you can give them a new religion that you make up.

An example from current fiction is George R.R. Martin's Song of Fire and Ice where people often exclaim to the old gods and the new gods. Without weighing himself down with too much detail, Mr. Martin shows that the people in his stories had to overcome religious differences to work together.

While inventing a whole new religion or even several of them can appear tedious on the onset, you really only need to come up with some rituals, holy days, and a few more rules that you can add to your story for added texture.
