Become an Angel on Writing.Com

From the moment you came across this site called Writing.Com, I suspect you wondered, as I did, if this site was for you. I had searched for a writing site where I could post my work and maybe get some feedback on it. I’ve since discovered the WDC offers much more. Whether you’re here to have one location to keep your writings, or to write that ‘great American novel’, you’ve committed to your passion by clicking “Yes” to the Terms of Agreement.

Most of you have heard by now of the passing of one of our much loved members, SHERRI GIBSON Author Icon. Miss Sherri’s membership spanned fewer than ten years, but her presence on WDC was far more reaching than those few years belied.

I joined two years after Sherri and she was already a force here. She influenced me as a new Black case to start reviewing other members’ stories. You’ll reap many more benefits by reviewing in addition to writing, she told me. She was right! I joined Sherri’s reviewing group, "SIMPLY POSITIVE GROUPOpen in new Window.. Not only did the quality of my writing improve by reading others’ works and providing my opinion of them, but I gained a lot more confidence in my ability to express myself beyond my writing. I was listed consistently in the top 50 listed reviewers during my first year earning a Reviewing MB each month AND more than 150K in gift points—heady times indeed for a newly minted member of WDC.

The name Simply Positive was more than a term—it was the epitome of her vision for life. Even through the health issues that plagued her, she continually encouraged not only her group members but the membership at large through donations to member activities and thoughtful notes to individual members.

It's hard to really get to know a person here. Fostering and maintaining a personal friendship that the distances that online contact entails is difficult at best. Deep relationships need that personal touch, that face-to-face contact allowing folks to really learn about one another. Still, as you become more involved with the activities and people on WDC, you may find persons you consider an angel. While they may not see themselves in that light, their actions say otherwise. They just want to give back some of the help and guidance they received when they first joined.

The first time you posted a story seemed daunting at first. As with anything, it gets easier each time you do it. You may even refine your methods enough to create a How-To article on some aspect of your experiences. Pass those experiences on whenever you have a chance. Over the years, many of these help articles have been codified into our Reference Guide, "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window..

Or, you may have an idea for a group. Like-minded members will flock to that idea. Sherri Gibson joined WDC in May 2006, just two years before me, and soon after started not one, but two reviewing groups. With more than 500 members between "SIMPLY POSITIVE GROUPOpen in new Window. and "SIMPLY POSITIVE NEWBIE REVIEWERS GROUPOpen in new Window., Sherri’s reviewing groups remain a major force on Writing.Com.

Remember your early days and those persons who help you navigate the site. Pass it on whenever you have the chance. Sherri Gibson did … and we are better off for her generosity. Thank you, Sherri.

Ask & Answer

And from the mailbox about my last Noticing Newbies newsletter, "Best Laid PlansOpen in new Window..

From dragonwoman Author Icon: It varies how I approach a piece. I usually get my characters down (but some new minor ones often rudely push their way in) I try to do a loose outline (although I don't always follow it) especially if I'm running into a time crunch and have to leave the work for awhile. I agree with the notebook thing of course, especially since I often suffer from sieve memory.

Some characters really are pushy, aren't they? *Laugh* I guess as long as you find what works for you....

From Kanish ~ we got this! Author Icon: Hawaii, huh? *Envy* I want a new word for damn-extremely-super-jealous *Laugh* I am really glad that you could finish it on time *Smile*

Thanks. Me too! *Wink*

From CarbonMuse Author Icon: Eeep! I'm blushing profusely here *Bigsmile* Thank you for the feature and thank you to writing.com for creating such a great community. The amount of feedback and great advice just bowls me over. I'm hooked for life!

That's so good to hear. I know you'll be one of those angels I'm speaking of above.
