Letter from the editor

Valentine's Day is approaching fast and I noticed in particular because I spent part of an eight hour work shift putting up V-Day candy, most of which was pink, red and/or heart shape related with the exception of a couple Star Wars candies that we didn't know where to put yet.

It's hard to avoid as we near February. Hearts shapes, red and pink, it's all going to be in the stores along with the candy and chocolates because that is love... or something like that.

Then again, others of us see the pink and hearts, which instead is a reminder of something not part of our lives. I sometimes refer to the holiday as Single's Awareness Day because it does make you more aware of the single factor because of the pressure to be in a relationship for a holiday that Valentine's Day can create. Then again, that pressure for both couples and those alone alike, that can make for some conflict in a story.

Symbols are useful too. While I don't appreciate the color pink in particular, when I see the different ones around, I can immediately associate it with not only the holiday but the concept of romance. Red is often a color associated with romance, love, and even erotica depending on the genre you prefer. Even fuzzy handcuffs come in pink or red (we had some plastic ones at the store last year for Valentine's day cause who knows why).

What do our characters think of heart shapes and the color schemes of romance? Is there a Valentine's or couple holiday in the world of your story? Does that poem need a heart cover image? Just a few questions to consider as we get closer to February and the day of romance.

Have fun and keep writing. Make sure to check out a couple writing contests as some will be doing romance/love rounds and others are open again for another bought of love and excitement. Bring your conflict, characters and maybe a pink heart or two. *Wink*
