Get Busy!
Remember those New Year's resolutions? How are you doing? Are you still dieting and pumping iron in the gym? Are you still working on your novel? I hope so.
In the meantime, I thought I'd touch base with a few things about WDC that you may or may not know. We all want the best advantage, whether we're entering a contest on the site or writing for publication. We want our work to shine brighter than the rest and be the winner. What can you do?
Expand your vocabulary. This doesn't mean open a thesaurus and plunk random words into your work. It means really knowing and using those works in the best way possible. Did you know about the WDC Ideanary? Oh it's one of the cool tools hiding on WDC that can be a fun help. In the left column, click Writing.Com Tools and click Ideanary. Put in a word in the search field and see what suggestions WDC has. And look right above the Ideanary...it's Writing Prompts. This gives a text prompt for story ideas. Or hey, maybe even give you an idea for a contest!
Support your community. If you don't have time to host contests and activities, support them with gift points. If you don't have gift points, review! There are always requests for reviews out there and new members who don't know how to ask and post review requests. This community is only as good as the members are that participate in it. This is a good way to meet other members and network. When it comes time to polish your work and ask for help in editing, your WDC friends can be a tremendous asset.
Last of all, be helpful and polite. No one gets paid here. We all work for the love of our community and the desire to see it keep growing. Friendships and even marriages have been forged here. Publication happens all the time. It's not an unattainable goal. So, Write On!

Excerpt: All you need to do, is to write a story or poem as if the object itself is actually an animate character. Give the object animate (human) thoughts, feelings, family, body parts, emotions etc.
Excerpt: "The Poet's Place " is for anyone who loves to read, write, or review poetry. It is a discussion place for all of us to learn from each other. It's a place to exchange reviews. There are contests, poetry readings and review blitzes. We have a Poetry Professor that creates discussions about poetic devices, forms, and anything else that pertains to poetry. So, if you are poet, this is the place to be!

Excerpt: Life isn't all rainbows, unicorns, and happy feelings. There are plenty of poetry groups for this kind of work (and I enjoy them all), but I want to enjoy the dark side as well. Show me the darkest corners of your heart and mind. Scare me, stir me, make me cry.

Last month's question: What do you do to prepare your writing for a contest?
~ Aqua ~ responded: I just write like I normally write my usual stories. You know, plan out a story line, start writing it and go with the flow. After completing it, I edit it, request reviews from good reviewers and edit my work. After this, I submit it to the contest.
S Ferguson~ Prepping for Prep replied: In regards to this weeks question: I don't do much to prepare. Now, I haven't entered a contest in a while but I just wait until something inspires me. I type it up, give it a once over, and submit. Your advice is good to take a day or two and come back to it but it's hard for me. I want the world to read it now!
