It is time once again for The Quills! Are you all excited? Well, surely not everyone is. Given the number of new people joining WDC every year, I imagine that this is the first some have heard of it. In this newsletter, you will learn everything you need to know to take part this year and help prepare for next year's ceremony. |

What are The Quills?
"The Quills" is an award ceremony to honor writers on the site. There are categories for writing formats (story, poetry, newsletter, nonfiction, blog, novel, etc) and genres (including Action/Adventure), but there are non-writing awards as well. These include Best Reviewer, Best New Portfolio, Best Portfolio, Best Contest, and Best Forum.
No matter what a person is interested in doing on WDC, the Quills has it covered. Over the 9 years that the event has been running, it has changed and added categories to better fit the community. Even if you have never heard of the awards before now, you can help change and adapt it to better represent the writers of WDC. You are part of the community, after all.
How does it work?
To be eligible for an award, a person must be nominated. The entire community can nominate items (or people), and once nominations close, a panel of judges tackle the task of judging each category. There are over 40 categories to judge, so this takes some time. Meanwhile, the entire community votes on the genre awards. Once the community's and judge's votes are tallied, preparations begin for the ceremony.
What's the ceremony like?
"The PreQuill Gala (9th Annual Quills)" was last Saturday, which was great fun. The finalists were announced for each category and three lucky categories already had their winners announcements, so if you're wondering what the ceremony will be like, I recommend looking through the PreQuills materials. The big event is much the same... just much bigger!
Why tell me now?
The votes are all in, all decisions made, and the 9th annual ceremony is about to begin! This Saturday, May 28th at 6:00pm (WDC time), "The 9th Annual Quills Ceremony" will start. If you wont be available at 6pm, don't worry! The ceremony lasts for several hours.
How does the community take part in the ceremony?
First, you can go to the In & Out (i.e. click "The 9th Annual Quills Ceremony" ). That is where the announcements will take place. You can watch as people win and accept their awards. Just refresh the page to see more of what is happening.
Second, for those with paid memberships, you can join the fun in Chat by clicking Writing.Com Tools on the left menu and choosing Chat from the available options. There, you can congratulate winners, commiserate with those who didn't win, and discuss who you think will win the next category. I took part in Chat last year, and it was super fun! Even if you're not nominated, it is fun to watch friends and acquaintances win. Surely you know at least one of the people honored with "Invalid Item" ?
Third, if all goes well on the technical end, you will be able to hear and watch Elle - on hiatus and a gaggle of fellow writers announce and discuss the Quills live as they happen!
Final suggestions?
The Quill Awards cannot operate without donations. All together, there are 4,000,000 gift points worth of prizes given at this event. If you are feeling generous, now or throughout the year, feel free to pop into "The Quills" and donate. If you want, you or your group can sponsor a specific prize that is close to your heart or fitting for your group as well. For example, a newbie group may want to sponsor the Best New Portfolio award, while a romance writer may choose to sponsor the Romance Genre award.
And finally, nominations for the 2016 awards will open immediately after the ceremony ends! That poem you read last week and loved? Go nominate it! If you read a story written in 2016 that you thought was particularly good, go nominate it! Did someone give you a really amazing review? Nominate them for Best Reviewer! Do you never miss an opportunity to enter a certain contest or take part in a certain activity? Go ahead and nominate them. Increase the diversity of the nominations and make it interesting for the judges next year! And of course, give good writers their chance to win.
I hope to see you at the ceremony!

As is fitting for the Action/Adventure newsletter this week, here are a few of the items up for a Quill in the Action/Adventure genre. I also would like to say a big Thank You to whoever nominated my newsletters as well. My book of drafts is up for the genre award as well.
