Auctions and Raffles
You probably joined Writing.Com to showcase your writing, or to improve that writing ... or both. It's true, you can do just that. But, there's so much more to Writing.Com. Members become involved in so many ways. Just look at the listings under Browse By Type and Community in the Navigation menu by which you can promote member interaction or become involved in events yourself.
Two very popular activities are Auctions and Raffles. Both activities are essentially fund-raising events run by members to promote a specific cause. Here's a definition of both activities taken from "Writing.Com 101"
Auctions. These fundraisers involve the organizer and/or other members putting up an item or items for which other members can bid, with the highest bidder taking home the prize. For example, a member might offer a prize package that includes a few reviews, a Merit Badge, and an Awardicon for the donor's favorite item. Members participating in the auction then bid on that package of prizes each new bidder offering a higher number of Gift Points than the last, until the auction time limit expires, at which point the bidder committing the highest number of Gift Points wins that package.
Raffles. These fundraisers involve purchasing tickets or countable items, and then having all of those purchased items entered into a random drawing for a winner. For example, tickets may be 1,000 Gift Points each, and members can purchase as many as they'd like while the raffle is open. Once the deadline for buying tickets has passed, the organizer will enter all those tickets into a drawing and select winners for the prizes based on random selection (such as via Virtual Dice, for example) .
I personally love auctions. One can really get caught up in the bidding, especially when you find a package you just have to have, as I often do. I check in regularly because another member may just have to have "my" package too. Then the bidding wars begin. Don't worry--it's all in fun, and very often for a good cause. I've gone down to the final minute of an auction a number of times. Some I've won; some I've not. In any case it's always fun to take part.
Raffles, on the other hand, are an easy way to support another member's fund-raising event. You just order tickets, pay for them up front, and wait for the selection of the winner(s). You can buy tickets for yourself, or as a thank you or a gift for another member. Either way, you don't have to monitor the status--the raffle organizer will notify that winners--unless you want too.

And from the mailbox about my last Noticing Newbies newsletter, "Newsletters: Information for the Masses" .
From Joey' Falling for the Season : Another excellent newsletter Jace,
I can't tell you or others, how much I rely on a member's Bio Block and Biography when I am doing a first-time review for them. I want to provide information that is helpful and to send them a three-page line-by-line, doesn't help them if they are just looking for a casual comment, or wanting to share a joke they just heard.
But, if they tell us that they are serious writers looking for direct feedback about improving their craft. I am not going to send them a howdy-howdy glad you joined the WdC party; your post was just grand.
Knowing a little about a writer's experiences and their age group also helps when one uses references. A teen is not likely to identify with a quote from Orwell as much as they might from Jo Rowling. Where for an old bird like me the reverse is true.
I am going to save a link to this newsletter to send with newbies I review that have not filled out their What's the scoop sheets. Thanks for another great resource.
I really appreciate your encouragement, Joey. Good point at using heir Bio to help personalize a review.
From Sewcrazy Again π€ : Hello, I'm 'Sewcrazy'. "Welcome Newbies to Whole New World. The world you've probably been looking for! Well, here it is, you have stumbled into a Magical hole; just like Alice In Wonderland! Where 'you' can be yourself, ask questions, get the reviews you've been wanting so badly. Where, Help and Friendships begin, Contests to enter, Poetry that never ends, Inspiration, and just plain fun! I'm going on a little over two years now, and I'm not going anywhere else. I feel a desire to be trapped in WDC and the community.
A Relm of people just like ourselves! Again, Welcome everyone! Enjoy! ππππ€π±πβ¨π¦π²πππΈπ§βοΈπ«
Thanks Jace for posting your newbies letters!
Thank you.
