HORROR

Everybody is afraid of something. Something out there . . . just around the corner. You can feel it . . . hear it, smell it, but you just can't see it. At least, not yet, but it's coming.

It's coming for you.

In the glimmer of the flashlight, shadows form and play weird tricks with your eyes. A large animal flits past the window outside. A rustling sound comes from behind a closed doorway that opens onto the small terrace. You approach the door quietly, stepping softly around the debris. If there is someone hiding inside, they've gone silent. You grip the flashlight as tight as you can, strangling all the light possible out of it. Then you kick the door open, knocking it off its hinges and onto the floor where it throws up a cloud of dust.

There is someone there all right, or is it something? Dark-skinned and evil, like a demon escaped from hell, it looks like a subhuman, swaying on hands and knees, staring insanely into the beam of light through eyes that are as red as burning coals.

You instinctively step back. The thing rears up on its knees and lunges at you. Using the flashlight as a weapon, you bring it down on your attackers head and hear the crack, like a walnut bursting.

The hideous beast makes a ghastly retching sound and collapses, its head caved in. You step up to the huddled form, lean over, and beam the flashlight on it. The body is filthy and completely naked. The wild eyes are staring sightlessly, a bright red where white should have been. the face is that of a boy, no more than thirteen.

Fear strikes with such shock, such stunning force, that you are for several moments numbed with the realization of the danger. You turn suddenly and begin running back the way you have come.

But it is too late, far too late.

A wall of shrieking fiends burst from every dark corner. You are swallowed in a seething tidal wave before you can cry out. The savage horde comes on hands and knees like jackals, pulling you down and snapping at every piece of exposed skin with their teeth.

Are you afraid yet?

Until next time,

Hi Bill! I agree about using your own fears to write about. You'll do a much better job describing things and it will be easier to write if you stick to what's "real," or at least real for you. In fact, when you write novels, it really pays to write what you're passionate about, fearful of, etc. Writing a novel takes a long time and you'll get tired/bored unless your heart is in it. Great NL! *Bigsmile*

You speaketh the truthest, Oh, scary one. Yes, fear is the great horror story motivator. You've scared the crap outta me, and at times I've scared the crap outta me, so, yeah, misery enjoys company. Must face our fears! I guess that's why I'll be spending my July in GoT! *Shield3*

One doesn't have to look too hard to find horror in everyday life. Just watch the news this past week. Last night another tragedy in Orlando. While staying at a Disney resort hotel, a toddler, playing near water's edge, was taken by an alligator. Father tried to rescue his child, but alligator took the child underwater. At this writing, authorities have recovered the body of the toddler.
