Letter from the editor

When it comes to dating and romance type of stories, there are often ones about first loves and the first person the character dates, but that's not always going to be the case. Some characters have had more than one relationship, which means there is a potential character that may provide different and interesting roles, depending on the story.

The ex can have a variety of different roles in the story when one gets involved. They can provide a source of conflict, as one might expect. Sometimes there is a lot of drama remaining from the ex boyfriend or girlfriend due to how things ended and the general way the relationship went. Some of them can get a little overwhelming or cause issues with the new relationship. Even when still friends with the ex, there can be conflict since not everyone is comfortable with the person they are seeing being that close to the person from the past. They might wonder if they will lose their relationship due to that person, for example.

Aside from conflict, they can also play a variety of roles when it comes to secondary characters. Other than family, in most instances, the ex can probably fill one of the roles. Involving them can help develop the story and character further.

While first loves are nice to write about, sometimes things don't work out and we then can write about the ones that follow. But let's not forget the ex's exist out there still too. And maybe can come in handy in how things go in the story. It's all a part of writing that romance and like any aspect, depends on how you write it.
