About This Newsletter

We don't always feel like we matter. That we have worth. But we do. Everyone does.

This week's Spiritual Newsletter, then, is all about what's important.

Letter from the editor

Who matters in this world? Is it the leader of your country? A celebrity whose every move is discussed in magazines? A doctor? A nurse? A member of your fire service? A police officer? A soldier? The answer is all of the above. The answer is also you.

It may not always feel like it, but everyone matters. There’s so much talk about elites, and class, and superior and inferior and that kind of talk is all nonsense, really. Does how much money a person has dictate their worth? Are you somehow less of a person if you grow up in a small apartment rather than in a mansion? The circumstances you grow up in can affect your options in life, sure, but they do not affect your individual value. Which may sound like common sense – I sure hope that it does – and you may wonder why I’m even bothering spelling it out in this newsletter, but the fact is that it’s all too easy to forget our own worth, and the worth of others.

Have you ever seen how some customers treat retail staff? I once had a summer job in a department store and learned there and then that if you work in a place like that, you can easily develop a severe dislike of humanity. There are people who’ll treat you like you’re so far beneath them that you may as well be a little bit of dirt stuck on the bottom of their shoe – a bit of dirt they unfortunately have to deal with to get what they want, but the sooner that unsavoury piece of business is dealt with, the better. The same goes for restaurant staff, and cleaners, and other occupations that society’s somehow marked as “less”.

Amazing, really. We’d be in real trouble without cleaners. Without those who pick up our garbage. And where will you get your stuff from if there are no shops? No people to help you in those shops? Or if you want to go out for a meal, it kind of helps when there are people who will cook said meals, and ensure your plates and glasses and cutlery are nice and clean and placed on a nice and clean surface. The people who do those jobs, are doing jobs that matter. And they matter, too.

What we do, day to day, is important. Every word we speak is important – words can make or break those we share them with. The time a parent spends with a child matters, as they can grow up kind and helpful and confident, or damaged and insecure. Our actions here on this website matter. When you review someone’s work, you can be helpful and kind and encouraging, or unhelpful, unkind and discouraging. You could set someone on the road to writing their masterpiece or lead someone to decide that they should quit writing, even though with a bit of support they would have enjoyed their creative outlet, and may have gone on to produce some very good pieces.

I have had days when I felt of little worth. Sometimes that was because of others making me feel that way. Other times it was because of low self-confidence, or because I looked around at the world and all the unpleasant things going on and I felt helpless. Like nothing I could say or do would make any difference. Whatever the cause, feeling worthless isn’t a pleasant experience and nobody should ever feel like that.

I’ve heard people argue that equality is a silly concept because we’re all different. We all have different strengths and weaknesses, and some talents are more useful than others. Sure, it’s true that our strengths and our talents differ, and that what’s seen as useful goes in and out of fashion, but as clichéd as it may sound, we all need the other. If everyone was designed to be a surgeon, for example, what about all the many other things that need doing? Being on a writing website, imagine a world without books, poems, with so many stories left untold...

It may have been said so many times before, but we need to be kinder to others. We also need to be kinder to ourselves. You matter. What you do matters. I hope it’s been helpful to be reminded of that.
