Romance Poetry: Sonnets Part 4
As promised in part 3, here is sonnets part 4. In this newsletter you will find sonnet variations that didn’t make it in parts one, two and three. Go to "A Poet's Tool Box" [E] to find the other sonnet variations covered in previous newsletters—and yes, there will be a part five somewhere down the line.
BRIEF HISTORY
As I mentioned in my previous articles on the subject of sonnets, the sonnet is the poetic version of the sonata. First on the sonnet scene, around the 1200's, were the Sicilian sonnets (New Princeton 1168). Most of the variations in this newsletter are newer ones created within the last decade or two.
MUST HAVES
- 14 lines (***A couple exceptions are listed in the Part 1 variations.)
- Set up: An idea, issue, point of view, question, outlook or theme.
- Turn/Volta (also known as the pivot): Fortify a point, use an opposite point of view, answer a question, or take a change in direction.
- Summary: Wrap it up. Sometimes this step is combined with the volta (Turco 263).
COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET'S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?
- Rhyme scheme (See variations.)
- Meter (See variations.)
- Where to place the turn/volta. (See variations.)
- Topic/theme
