Letter from the editor

We are entering into the second week of a brand new year. Have you set any writing goals for yourself? Have you taken steps toward making them real? What steps are you/have you taken?

I've always been a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants type of writer. No real plan, just going with the flow. And you know what? I'm still floating about with no writing published.

Not this year! I have goals in mind and have actually begun action toward those goals.

*Idea*Today, I bought my copy of the 2006 Writer's Market and some highlighters. I will mark every market that I'm interested in and every one that suits writing I already have.

*Idea*I will begin serious work on the book of law enforcement themed poetry I have in the works. I have several titles for poems. I even have the site chosen where I want to take the cover photo.

*Idea*I will choose one of the several novels I have in varying stages and, at the least, complete the first draft.

*Idea*I will add more short stories to my slowly growing collection.

These may seem like simple goals and I chose them for a reason. I don't want to overwhelm myself and risk feeling like a failure should I not accomplish all of them.

Set goals that are doable. Don't set goals so lofty that you won't achieve them. Do set goals that will challenge your creativity.

We have an entire new year before us. Let's make it a creative and productive one!
