About This Newsletter

The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government.
~ Thomas Jefferson

Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.
~ Franklin D. Roosevelt

The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.
~ Winston Churchill

Letter from the editor

Is there anything better than deleting your finished newsletter? Clicking on that tiny X without realizing it, without saving it. *Think*

Without trying to create a controversy while talking about different governments, I'd like to point out that, as writers, consciously or subconsciously, we do include different types of governments into our writing. The fact that politics, religion, and race play big roles in our everyday lives, means it sneaks into our written word as well, be it fiction or otherwise.

While the dystopian writer leans heavily on a specific government type to rule their writing, most of us use it as a tiny backdrop if at all. However, what if we did need to use it? Do we know what the basics are? Here's a list of the ones most familiar to us.

*Bullet* Anarchy
*Bullet* Autocracy
*Bullet* Communism
*Bullet* Democracy
*Bullet* Dictatorship
*Bullet* Fascism
*Bullet* Federation
*Bullet* Junta
*Bullet* Monarchy
*Bullet* Oligarchy
*Bullet* Plutocracy
*Bullet* Republic
*Bullet* Technocracy
*Bullet* Theocracy
*Bullet* Totalitarian
*Bullet* Tyranny

Without going too much into detail, most of these are rather self-explanatory but perhaps we put them out of our minds, since we don't hear too much about them. Those who refer to a government which is power-hungry, such as tyranny, fascism, dictatorship, even monarchy, are more likely to be your choices for a novel. They will dictate where your novel will go and how to set the pace to change what must be changed to a different type of ending.

Destroying type of government doesn't mean that all will be well with the world. What follows is always lawlessness and disorder and there's always someone who'd like to take control of it all and rule the land the way they wish to.

Even in today's world all types of governments rule different countries. It may not be fiction but it may be worth writing about.

'Til next time!
