Free Your Mind of Cant

A clear head is a creative head.

Samuel Johnson, an 18th century English writer is famously quoted with the words, "Free your mind of cant."

The phrase has been corrupted in modern times by the fitness industry to read, "Free your mind of can't." That was not what Samuel talked about. Samuel talked about 'cant,' meaning mental clutter that stifles creativity.

His advice, if you want to advance your creative endeavors is to free yourself, and mostly your mind, from all unnecessary worries and thoughts. Let go of all things that weigh you down, keep you thinking in circles, and keep you trapped in writer's block.

How can you do that?

Assuming you live a pretty average life with work or school, bills, and responsibilities, there is only so much you can put off to free up your time to spend all of it writing. You can, however, do all in your power to minimize the limitations by those things. Get them out of the way as early as possible. Set yourself up for success. Once you're done with work, studying, and keeping your home clean - take time for your writing.

You should be able to write a short story in a day and spend the rest of the week editing and polishing it if you tackle all things on your mind one thing at a time and cross them off so that they disappear from your mind for a few hours.
