Energy Leaks
Ever notice that you set a goal with great intentions and never plan on failing. But somehow, the house is still a mess, the scale is still tipping over an acceptable limit, and the bills haven’t gotten any better? I know that this time of year, this first week in February, many of us are feeling this way.
We form goals out of needs and wants. Some are really wishful thinking, like “I’m going to look like David Hassellhoff by summertime this year.” Then others really are important like “I’m going to give up smoking and I have a plan to do it!” No matter how we set them, we have great intentions, great expectations, and a plan. We set everything up, we tell our friends, and we advertise that we’re going to write something every day, by golly! And then, here comes the real world.
And this real world – it comes hard and fast. Suddenly, there’s family drama. Maybe your boss is getting divorced and taking it out on you. Your spouse’s health starts to suffer or even gets worse. You commit time you don’t have to a charity event. Work picks up without notice and suddenly overtime is not just freely given but demanded.
Honestly, this real life thing sucks!
I’ve been making a conscious effort this year with my husband to watch our goals very closely. We have personal, financial, and spiritual goals and even January has been incredibly hard to keep them in site. Then, I found a book I had bought nearly a year ago and never read. I figured I would and I found something amazing.
It’s in Jesus, CEO by Laurie Beth Jones. It’s a book about business and leadership skills that Jesus displayed during His time on Earth – and they get really interesting. It’s not just stuff like “he loved everyone he came into contact with.” We all think of that first off – but this chapter got me. It’s called “He Guarded His Energy.”
Here is a short quote:
Jesus had tremendous energy, and he knew how to direct it. He was so clear about his mission that he avoided many real and potential energy leaks. For example, even though he was a teacher, he refused to engage in meaningless debates with people who wanted not to learn but to argue. Even at his trial, he did not waste time or energy in what he knew would be a meaningless defense.
Although he was a recruiter of sorts, he never wasted energy begging or manipulating others to follow him. In fact, he trained his staff to “wipe the dust from their feet” and to keep moving if people were resistant to his ideas. He also said not to “cast your pearls before swine,” a very graphic image about the importance of knowing where and with whom to share the treasure of your energy.
It goes on to talk about how when your energy is depleted, you need to take time to refresh it. Spend some time alone, relaxing, talking with the Divine and refreshing yourself. It’s very important to your overall goals.
In this, I think there are some steps we can take with our goals that will make life more productive.
1. Realize how and why you set a goal. Look at your motivations.
2. Set priorities of what you want the most to accomplish and what is the most important to accomplish.
3. Realize the “real world” will stress you and try to distract you from your goal.
4. Search for energy leaks and recognize them.
5. Make a conscious effort to avoid energy leaks
6. Learn how to replenish your energy supplies.
7. Revisit your goals and reprioritize if necessary.
And with this, let’s get our eyes focused back on the prize and see if we can have a very successful 2006!

Great newsletter Love! I am always happy when things are written for people of all faiths. It brings us all together as one, which is something that doesn't happen often enough. This is definitely one of my favorites to date...
Thanks Sara! I had fun writing it, and the knowledge that I gained from the research has helped in more than a few situations since then.
