Mistletoe Works!

Just when you thought romance was dead: mistletoe to the rescue.

In today's newsletter, I want to share with you a story from real life. It is romantic. It is sweet. And it really happened.

In October 2015, my husband and I started going on hikes with a park ranger in Griffith Park, Los Angeles. Since he is a public figure, it's okay if I give you his name: Ranger Ernie.

Ranger Ernie is now retired after 27 years of working as a park ranger in Griffith Park. For the last 17 years of his tenure, he led twice a month hikes through Griffith Park. Some of his hikes were short, some were longer, and some were very strenuous with well over 10 miles of hiking up and down the steepest inclines in the park.

Ranger Ernie did much more than chase a group of dedicated hikers up and down, around and about. He would take frequent stops and teach us about edible plants, show us animal tracks, or just give us some history of the park. Since the park was dedicated as public land in 1896, many things have happened there. For one, many TV shows such as McGyver and movies such as Lalaland were filmed there. The famous batcave from the original 1960s Batman TV show is in Griffith Park.

Since Ranger Ernie took many such breaks no matter how long the hike, the group was a little surprised, but not put off when one fine day, Ranger Ernie invited one of his regulars to stand at a certain spot. Innocent of his intentions, she came to stand right close to him. He pointed up at the tree he was under and explained that mistletoe grew in this tree. It is a parasite, that absorbs water and nutrients from the host plant. Since it was December by then, Ranger Ernie also reminded us that it was a tradition to kiss under the mistletoe, and he boldly kissed the woman. A simple, quick peck on her lips. She giggled, but didn't seem too put off. Later on the hike, I overheard Ranger Ernie apologize to her, but she didn't seem to want to press charges.

Let me cut to the chase for you!

Three months later, Ranger Ernie and the woman he kissed under the mistletoe were engaged.
In June of the same year, they got married and even some other regulars from the hiking group attended the wedding.
The couple has been able to retire together. Him from being a park ranger, and her from an office job. They will spend their golden years hiking in California and other places.
