Do you have weird dreams? I do. My dreams tend to be full-on experiences – it’s as though I have stepped into a movie and can see, hear, smell, touch everything. In general, that’s okay. It’s quite cool. Some people tell me that they don’t dream, and I simply can’t imagine what that’s like. Guess at least they don’t have nightmares, but on the whole I enjoy having my dreams.
They can be seriously weird, though, as said. I remember when I was about four years old and I had a dream that I was in a skyscraper that was surrounded by giant birds. For some reason, giant birds have stuck with my throughout life – I have had several dreams about giant swans trying to conquer the world, for example. I get aliens, wars – I’m usually a member of some kind of resistance – all sorts. In one dream I and 23 others had been abducted for a Hunger Games type of experience. I had to team up with someone and we were told that only one team could make it to the finish line and be returned to Earth. Along the way we befriended a dragon and we figured out that the whole purpose of the game was to form one giant team – cooperation rather than elimination. In another I was somehow catapulted to Iceland and landed in a volcano. The volcano launched me across the ocean into the arms of the Statue of Liberty. From there, I visited all my Writing.Com friends in the States.
There are those who believe that as dreams are the result of our brains processing events, it is possible to interpret them. For example, it’s said that if you dream about flying, it means that you are experiencing a sense of freedom in life, where you previously felt restricted. If you dream about taking an exam it means you’re feeling insecure and concerned that you are not living up to other people’s expectations. Apparently birds that are attacking people means that I am experiencing a conflict with my spirituality. Not sure how conflicted I was about my spirituality when I was four...
And I am not too sure that my dreams can usually be summed up by a symbol or two. They really are like movies, most of the time, with a lot going on. Sure, if I am waiting for an essay result and I dream that I either receive a low score, or a high one, an obvious conclusion can be reached. Or if I have been watching a load of videos by my favourite band and I then dream that I am attending one of their concerts, that’s pretty straightforward, too. On the whole, though, it’s not that simple.
There was one time when I had an extremely vivid dream in which I stood on a hill overlooking a battlefield. The conflict was over. It wasn’t a pretty sight. There were two women with me, one about my mom’s age, one a grandmother’s age. They were wearing old-fashioned outfits. I’d never seen them before, but I had a real sense that I knew them. That I’d been there before, in that moment. I don’t know if I believe in past lives. Some people do. Maybe I had been there before. Guess I’ll never know.
I also have lucid dreams – dreams in which I am, to some extent, aware that I am dreaming and can alter events. I still remember the first time I was able to do that. I was in this old building, and there was a big spider that I was afraid of. I didn’t feel like having a dream about a big, scary spider, and I was able to turn her into a cute and fluffy pink one. Sometimes changing things to my liking feels like it takes some mental strain. Other times it’s easy. It doesn’t happen every night, but often enough, and I have far fewer bad dreams now than I used to.
What do you think about dreams? How do you experience them? Can you remember them when you wake up? Can you alter them? It would be nice if they all made sense, wouldn't it? Then again, maybe the weirdness is what can make them so much fun.
