Letter from the editor

I feel like now more than ever, I receive a lot of messaging that I'm not doing enough, creating enough, making enough when it comes to my creative life. This is especially challenging because I am a freelancer, and so I can spend entire days doing creative work that's not even my own work. It's very easy to get mired in a feeling like I'm not moving forward.

Usually when that happens, it ends up being an issue where I'm not refilling the well fast enough. I know I talk about this issue a lot, but that's in part because it's critically important! To be a writer, you need to read widely inside and outside your chosen genres, whether it's a paper book, on your mobile device of choice, an audio book... Words in will help you get words out!

Sometimes, though, life is just draining. Sometimes you just can't write. I've gotten into a few slumps like this, where I've gotten too busy or exhausted or stressed out to write, and I'm slowly training myself to make better use of the fallow times, because those fallow times are essential to my creative process. Not only is it necessary to give myself a break sometimes, just to recover as a creative professional, sometimes I need to acknowledge that the time I spend working out story details in my head is still writing time--or at least that that time is still valid creative time and is truly valuable to my process.

These are just a few of the creative challenges I'm working through lately. What struggles have you gone through in your own work?

Until next time,
Take care and Write on!
Jay
