Meeting that Special Someone

One question that all couples have to answer at some point is, "How did you meet?"

When writing romance, it's not always the best choice to go chronologically and describe the first meeting of the eventual couple. Although it can work well and become part of the initial hook to rope the reader in. In Twilight, the book begins with the girl meeting the boy in class and keeps going from there.

Another way to tackle the "How did they meet?" issue is to show a couple that is already together and have them explain it through dialogue with a third person. It could also be a conversation between the couple. You could also show the first meeting in a flashback that a character has during a major event such as a proposal, wedding, first baby etc.

A sad version is after the relationship is over. Maybe one of the two is widowed and thinks back to that first time meeting. Or a little less final, after a divorce or during a period of separation.

Describing that first meeting can also be the source of comedy relief for an otherwise gloomy story. Romance can have a tendency to be slow and even border on depressive. Lightening up your story with a funny first meeting tale can really explain why the partners would even be willing to go through hardship with one another.
