Letter from the editor

Life... is ruin.

All light has fled and all that remains is gloom.

In the darkness, you can only feel your way to the light... but you can no longer feel anything. So you just stand. In the dark. Alone, for all eternity.

...okay, but seriously, though, there's something hilarious about epic despair, isn't there?

Or is it just me? I mean, not to make fun of people who are actually suffering - that would be rude - but sometimes overwrought, melodramatic tragedy can only elicit laughter.

This time of year is especially hard for many people, as the darkness is quite literal. One way to push through is humor. For me, all the attempts at cheery, uplifting "holiday spirit" crap has the opposite effect; it's mostly irritating. Instead, give me some song parodies, or otherwise subvert the feel-good messages, and I'll laugh almost every time. Schadenfreude is almost guaranteed to make my soul soar.

For example, I like to watch the Grinch, but turn it off just before his heart begins to grow.

Does this make me a terrible person? Yeah, probably. I can live with that if it keeps people from caroling outside my door.

But whatever it takes for you to get through this holiday season, enjoy it. Or don't - whichever makes you happier.
