Letter from the editor

When starting something many people jump in with both feet. Some start slowly. When starting with projects I usually begin with a lot of research depending on the project. The point is, everyone starts another stage differently.

Recently I decided that I was going to focus more on writing horror and mystery pieces. I am already working on a non-fiction book and two novels-one drama and one science fiction. These are old projects I decided to get done and published. From now on, though I will be writing horror and mystery. That's my genre.

I am starting with these genres slowly, and there are a few things I am doing to ease into it. For anyone starting a new genre I would recommend these baby steps.

Start Reading The Genre

Many writers write the genre they have always loved reading. If this is not the case, and you are writing a genre you have never experienced, read anything you can get your hands on in your chosen genre to see if it is "the one".

I read almost everything that Stephen King ever wrote as well as many other horror and mystery authors. I have read every word that Agatha Christie has ever written. I have plenty of experience with both of these genres, so I know I am going to love writing them.

Begin With Short Pieces

Don't dive into the horror, mystery sea without first dipping your toes in. Write flash fiction or a few short stories. Practise creating monster or killer characters to see if it fits you.

I have written a few short, flash fiction, pieces for blog posts and forums in the last few weeks, and I am very comfortable with the feel and atmosphere of horror and mystery.

Connect, Connect, Connect

If you have access to other authors in your genre speak with them. Find out about their writing and inspirations. I have read through the horror/scary and mystery newsletters on this site, paying particular attention to the articles which specifically talk about the genre and how it is written. Unfortunately, there are no authors in these genres that I can connect with in person.

Don't be afraid to start something new. If it feels right, it probably is. Just go slow and make sure it's right for you.
