Forest

Do you really want to know what's on the other side of that tree?

Wait! Aren't we in the Mystery newsletter? Why does this question sound so scary? Shouldn't this be in the Horror/Scary newsletter?

It sounds so scary because forests are dark and full of secrets. Some of those secrets are just a cute little bunny hopping across a path. Some other secrets are a mother bear and her young. And some secrets turn out to be mysteries that no one can solve.

Some forest mysteries can revolve around how nature itself behaves. How does a forest fire (not caused by humans) start?

Some forest mysteries involve a crime that happened. Like when a hiker or group of hikers come across a dead body in the forest. Now, the forest is a crime scene. Depending on the location, how remote etc., it can become quite an ordeal to find out what happened.

Missing person mystery.

The most traumatic ones are missing children. Many of us have seen the stories of hundreds of volunteers combing forests one step at a time to find a lost child. And each time a child is found, we also wonder how did they survive? Are there any mysterious creatures that look out for lost children?

Another type of missing person is the solo hiker. This is a little different from the missing child. It will usually involve an adult who went into the wilderness with some preparation. Also, search parties at least know where to start looking based on common hiking paths.

I once read how we feel about forests as a whole is how we look at life in general. Do you enjoy forests? Good for you. Write about your love for the forest. Are you worried about getting lost in a forest? Write about it! Make it a mystery!

Ask & Answer

In response to my last Mystery newsletter "The Open WindowOpen in new Window., I received the following replies:

Quick-Quill Author Icon wrote: I'm reading James Patterson for the first time. I chose his Murder Club series. So far what you have described has filled the first chapters of what I'm listening to. clue, resolve, clue resolve, red herring...

I have to admit, if I ever read a James Patterson book, I forgot. His name is on so many books nowadays, that he's become more of a brand name like Adidas or Toyota than necessarily an author. I think he's the author who does a lot of "Introducing (unknown author)" type books. Which is great that he's using his name recognition like that. It does create a situation where I just don't know if I have an opinion about him as a writer or not.
