The Fun of Fright

How much horror is funny?

When it comes to fictional horror, almost all of it is funny. As we read a horror story, we can choose to read it while clasping our hands together and nervously peeking over our shoulder to see if the monster is about to get us.
Or we can choose to read it with an easy laugh sitting in the corner of our mouth.

Scooby Doo proved a long time ago that most spooky or scary things are actually some prank or contraption designed to create a scare, but those pranks or contraptions aren't actually scary once unveiled. In the context of Scooby Doo, those pranks were either designed by a criminal, or they were actually funny.

As you write comedy, don't be afraid to scare your reader. A good jump-scare can be just as funny as a well placed pun or joke. Sometimes even more so when the reader finds out it was all part of the plan to make them laugh.
