When was the last time someone inspired you? What was it they said or did? Have you ever wanted to inspire others? Have you dreamed of somehow being a positive influence? I know that I have. And I sometimes feel that it's never going to happen. That I always fall short of being smart enough, creative enough or plain good enough to be that person who can bring even a tiny bit of light to others' days.
I know that that negative inner voice is wrong. A wonderful thing about being a writer and being on this site is that I've received feedback on my poems and my stories, and sometimes on my newsletters, and I have been told how my words made people smile, or offered comfort. I have had grandparents tell me how they read out a story of mine to their grandchildren. It's the kind of feedback that warms my heart and inspires me to keep on writing. It feels nice, doesn't it, when people enjoy our work? Perhaps I may not have inspired those readers as such, but I did do some good, and that means that whilst I may not be a bestselling author, what I put out there is good enough. I am good enough. And so are you.
What is it to inspire others? Definitions may vary, but to me it's to encourage someone to try something new. To try something different. To give them new ideas and fill them with enthusiasm and a belief that they can do that something or be that something that they wish to do, or be. It is actually a part of what we do on this website, even if it may not always feel that way. If you review, if you run contests and/or events, if you offer encouraging words on the newsfeed, you're being a positive force that, in a creative environment like this, is bound to bear fruit.
But your inspirational power is not limited to Writing.Com. You may be a preacher, or a teacher, or a motivational speaker, and be fully aware of what you can do, but you don't have to be to make a difference. There is a lot of power in simply being you and going about your day. I understand if that sounds far-fetched, but it's true.
Do you give up your seat on public transport to those who need it more? Do you hold open the door for others? You may see it as common sense to do this – just simple good manners – but you'd be surprised at the amount of people who feel too daunted to do so. People who are concerned about doing the wrong thing, because perhaps that lady isn't pregnant, or perhaps that gentleman doesn't want to be seen as elderly and in need of a seat, and then what? By setting a good example, you can inspire them to be braver and offer that seat, or hold that door next time.
In your place of work, in your place of faith or religion, in your school, at your gym, or book club, or wherever you are in contact with others, being kind and positive and encouraging can bring out the kindness and positive spirit in those who you engage with and those who observe you. You may inspire great things in those who you least expect it from – they may well be the ones who need your kindness and light the most.
Being realistic, you may not be an influence in the lives of everyone you meet, but every bit of light you shine is welcome, even necessary in this world. Consider how, when you are not feeling positive, nor kind, another person's smile and supportive words can make a difference to you, however small. It makes a difference to me, anyway. I may not be able to show it at the time. I may not be able to reciprocate in that moment. But it reminds me that there is good in the world, and that we are all in this together, and that things do get better. That I can make things better.
We humans have an amazing capacity to improve ourselves and to improve the lives of others. It's not always easy nor straightforward to do so, but we each have our own talents, and skills, and step by step throughout our existence we can learn to be our best selves. During this process, we can look to others who will show us ways that we may not have previously considered. It is good to remember that as we do this, others are looking to us to show them our ways.
You, too, are an inspiration.

The Spiritual Newsletter Team welcomes any and all questions, suggestions, thoughts and feedback, so please don't hesitate to write in!
Do you want to do something nice for someone? Perhaps even multiple someones? Something that is free, and only takes a minute of your time? Something that will make them very happy? Yes? Great!
The nominations period for the 2019 edition of "The Quills" [ASR] is coming to an end. If you can think of an excellent item written in 2019, or participated in a fun contest or event, or received excellent reviews from a particular person, why not take a moment to nominate them? There are lots of different categories, offering many different opportunities to nominate those people who have made a difference to you over the last year. You can use the form multiple times, so even if you can't think of someone or something straight away, you can return to it later. Or, well, as long as it's by the end of the month.
The form: "Quill Nomination Form 2024" [E]
To see who/what has already been nominated: "Invalid Item"
Thank you for being kind!
Wishing you a week filled with inspiration,
