A good book is handy for more
Than reading- handier than a tv-
More subtle in it’s intent
Than a hand held video game, with
Less to repent. Handy for such times
As come (when lifted rightly,
It more fully blocks the sun)-

When we would rather refrain
From speaking, it gives our eyes good
Reason for blindness- it is in fact
The perfect excuse for a polite snub

It fills an empty moment with interest
A fine substitute for loss of
Conversation- giving the air of Godiva
In place of Hersey’s common appeal

Yes, it’s a tidy tool for such times,
As sneak upon us, like this
To give us the studied appearance
Of not needing what we miss
