The Dark And Stormy Night
A working title by
Theresa Burres

“It was a dark and stormy night. In the flash of lightning the man was......” I stood up and walked around my chair. ‘This just isn’t right. Ok, try again.’

“It was a dark and stormy night. In the lightning flash the silowet... silhowet....” I sighed ‘Don’t obsess with the spelling. You know that the spell check will catch it’

“It was a dark and stormy night. In the lightning flash the outline of the man raised his arm......” ‘Nnnnnnooooooo!!!!! Why is this so hard to do?’ I went into the kitchen to get a drink. I knew that the contest said that the story needed to be about lightning.
‘ Ok, you can do this. I know you can.’

“It was a dark and stormy night. In the lightning flash the outline of the man was ........yhhhhh” I picked my head up from the keyboard to start one more time.

“The morning was bright as only a spring morning can be. The little girl walked through the pasture laced with little white, blue and yellow flowers. A soft breeze kissed the girl’s face before it touched each flower.”

“The whole world seemed fresh and shining new. As the girl walked by the stream that ran through the pasture something shining flashed from the water. The little girl reached into the flow of water and picked up a gold coin. The girl laughed as she turned the golden coin over and over in her hand.”

“ She knew that it was a coin but it didn’t know what kind it was. It didn’t look like any other money that she had ever seen before. She wondered if it might be Magic. In her fairy tale books magic things always gave the finder three wishes. Holding the coin tightly she closed her eyes and wished for what she always wished for... a pony of her own.”

“ Suddenly a softness touched her cheek. She opened her eyes and there was a brown and white pony standing in front of her. It was saddled, bridled and ready to ride. The little girl laughed, kissed the pony, then the coin. Slipping the coin into her pocket she climbed onto the pony and rode home. She told her mama about the magic pony that she had named Lightning. Reaching for the coin all she found was a hole.”

I sighed.
