lighthearted view for a contest on reincarnation
Reincarnation Damnation

Some dream of previous lives rich and grandiose,
Not so for others, however, are so verbose.

Some hail from the Goths,
Scoured the earth, to loot and to pillage.
No one, however, seems to come from that village.

Nary an insect, worm or monkey to be seen.
Most people lived life long ago
As a king or a queen.

With scepter in one hand,
Bejeweled crown upon bejeweled head,
With the crowd roaring, shouting,
“Off with his head.”

Why is it that no one is from history’s dungheap?
Because, perhaps,
In their own life they are kneedeep-

Stuck in a rut, there’s no future, nothing to gain
The light at the end of the tunnel
Is an on rushing train.
Bearing down on them for a head on collision
Most people don’t answer,
Won’t look out the window,
Their lives are spent in front of a television.

Who wants to dream of reality from reality?
Dreams are used to escape,
To dream of lives lived without borders,
No limits
No duality

Why burden yourself with a previous terrible life?
When the truth of our existence,
Is what drives us
To flee this, our present strife.

To separate real from imagined,
Like night from day a smooth grayness
There is no divide,no disconnect,
Only sameness

Looking for something, anything for validation
Dismissing the image in the mirror
With repudiation.

Whoever is in charge of this conflagration
Must have it in for some
And their repeated damnations.

When you look at a dung beetle, slug or mole
Imagine the look on the face, on that soul
When they are reincarnated and soon discover
The food that they scrounge for has come from
that hole.

For in every life, one sometimes stops to think
Would I be better off?
Could I live a life that doesn’t stink?

Then, think back to the beetle, slug or mole
And ponder,
When I do come back,
I’ll live in an igloo or hut or cave or shack
But I don’t want to eat anything falling
From an elephant’s crack.
