Cleric’s Revenge — Summary This novel is set on a world where magic not only exists, but is controlled by a powerful guild. It is also a time of change, as the old ways are being forgotten and magic is declining. Once the gods ruled supreme. Now their power is diminishing as people are beginning to worship a new God . . . Science. This decline has caused some concern with the Wizard’s Guild. The Guild decided to regulate the remaining magic through sanctions and taxes. So-called scientists are popping up in the major cities. The general populace welcomes and supports these scientists, and the Wizard’s Guild have taken a personal interest in converting these scientists back to the old ways. The use of violent force has become frequent. Primary Viewpoint Character Dav puts his needs above other people’s needs. He will not normally do something for someone without it directly furthering his agenda. His actions are motivated by his need for recognition, first from his father, then from others. He is more apt to do something for recognition than for monetary gain. He believes that the way to get recognition from his father is by becoming a powerful wizard like his father. Since Dav’s actions are self serving, the opposing character trait would be a self-sacrificing action. Dav’s need to be recognized causes him to steal the spotlight whenever he can. This is one of the reasons that he chose destructive magic as his discipline, it is the most spectacular type of magic. His aptitude for magic is just above average, not high enough to impress his father. Because of this he feels inferior and always at a deficit compared to others. His obsessive behavior has caused him to miss out on normal relationships including friendship, companionship, and love. |
