In late summer, the green cottonwoods show where water may be found.
“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water . . ..” Psalm 1:3

By September, the rolling hills of southeast Washington are dry and dusty. The wheat and barley stubble is a pale and faded version of its once shiny golden self and the only green to be found is in the draws where springs feed small streams of water. Scrubby hawthorns, golden willows, cottonwoods and blackberries fill these steep-sided crevices with lush green all through the hot end of summer because their roots have a source of water the rest of the land doesn’t.
As children of God, we have a source of refreshing spiritual water, the Holy Spirit, that can keep us green and alive in the driest of circumstances. In hard times, we should stand out because we have a source of spiritual vitality that the never fails. The green of our lives should signal to those who are thirsty where the Water of Life may be found.
