Opening scene to a prequel to Casablanca.
The Burning
Written by: Cameron Smith

A black screen appears with subtle sounds of heavy breathing coming from more than one person. A door is jerked open, it screeches from rust the rail car sits still exposed to the frigid air and a frozen landscape.
A man wearing a Nazi uniform screams in German, pulling people off the rail car.
A young man wearing a grey jacket, khaki pants, and a brown hat falls out of the rail car with the rest of the people. Quickly the men and woman are separated by the German Officers. They are lined up and taken in different directions.

Cut screen…

Soft sobs fill the air with groans and moans as the camera comes into view of a barracks inside. Bunk beds line the walls and thin sheets are on the beds. Almost everything is covered with frost. Some men are cuddled in a corner, surrounding something, there sad.

Man 1: Gosh dangn’t! we can’t even make it through the night.
Man2: This is suicide, we can’t do this anymore!
Man3: Shhh! Be quiet! There coming!

Heavy footsteps are followed by a screeching door.

Soldier1: Attention!

All of the men filed out in front of there beds. There all skinny, tired, pale sickly looking.
A German officer walks over to the corner to where the dead body lies. He holds a handkerchief in front of face.

Officer1: Filth… get it out of here.
The prisoners quickly carried the body out side to the crematorium.
The officer left the barracks and whispered something to the Gestapo.

Gestapo: Get outside now, hurry!

The Camera pans to outside the barracks in a frozen barren concentration camp. The men are lined up and put into formation.

Officer 1: Good morning, did you sleep well? I hope you did. Go to your stations!

Hundreds of men file out running in every direction.

Cut.
Black screen.

Voice: Laslos! Laslos! Where are you?
A rustling noise is heard and the black screen parts like opening eyes. A man stands there in front of Laslos.3rd person view. He gets up. There in a dark dreary place, shoes are everywhere. There in a warehouse. Laslos coughs.

Laslos: Thanks.

Nearby, a Gestapo starts yelling at someone
Gestapo: Lazy!
Thwops and screams echo through the building, the Gestapo walks by laslos and his friend; wiping off the blood from his club he turns and looks directly at Laslos.

Gestapo: He was lazy, sleeping on the job.
Laslos looks away and continues to sort shoes.
Cut…
