Through steel bars I watch the light fading
and I shiver as I turn away, wrapping up
in the one blanket I have for warmth,
knowing the inevitable will come again.
She comes to me in the twilight hours,
face twisted and bloated, a frightful sight.
In life she was a beauty, in death
she bears the pain of my brutal attack.
A bitter memory of what happened
lingered as twilight begged for darkness;
of throwing her body into the water
and leaving the scene far behind me.
I once thought by turning myself in
that somehow I could end the haunting.
Yet each day at twilight she comes back,
dripping hateful venom, slowly killing me.
In the shower I stand, knotted sheet in hand,
hangman's noose ready, no turning back.
I see her laughing, dead fingers beckoning me
to join her in Hell where she waits for twilight.
