I wonder why, in all my life,
I've heard of nothing but terror and strife.
Why can't we hear some happy news
And rid our land of the hardship blues?
Tsunamis here, bombings there,
Danger and paranoia everywhere.
And while the fighting's still at hand,
Some of us are living grand!
I wonder why, with all this trouble,
Peacemakers don't turn up on the double.
There's nothing but sides, wrong both ways,
And blood and screams fill our days.
I just cannot fathom why we're so bad,
From the cruelest jailer to the smallest lad.
In the tunnel where we find light,
I once saw nothing but malice and spite.
And yet I find, with utmost care,
A light at the end of the tunnel there.
A little seed, a tiny sprout,
In the battlefield of prejudice and doubt.
I plant it in the earth so dead,
But now I see some life instead.
