An odd journey down the hall. Question never answered.
The bang from the closing door echoed through her mind as she left the noisy room behind her. She turned to the right and was wondering how to get to math class from this side of the school when everything froze. There, standing only a yard away was he. They held each other’s gaze and though in reality it only lasted for a second, it felt like an eternity. Feeling very uncomfortable, she started walking. Unfortunately, he did too. She realized he was also heading to math and the uncomfortable feeling began churning her stomach and twisting it into knots.
As they trekked along the hallway together, she was behind him at first but soon felt the need to cross over to the other side, now both of them walking along either wall. You see, she never liked walking behind people and by moving to the side she hoped to pass him and get away from him. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t as if she didn’t like the guy. On the contrary! He was quite high up in the ranks as far as she was concerned. Maybe even a little too high up.
As they walked together, yet very much apart, she noticed two or three times when his head turned slightly, a subtle but sure aim to look at her. This didn’t help the carnival-like action going inside her and it caused her to walk faster. The stairs were drawing nearer and nearer and she did not want to go up the steps with him. It wasn’t like she was thinking, “Ew! I so do not want to go up the steps with you!” but more of a, “I can’t think rationally when feeling this way about you and I simply need to get away,” way of thinking.
She was successful in passing him and was relieved when she made the left onto the hallway with the stairs and he didn’t follow. The she recalled that though he did have math, his class room was on the opposite hallway, thus he would go up the other stairs.
Though they had parted, in a way he was still with her, memories of what had just occurred ‘between’ them swimming through her mind, bringing question after question which are still, to this day, unanswered.
