Alone, nothing to look forward to, struggling day after day. .What If?
What If?

Saturday afternoon, and here I am sitting on the patio and wishing I were somewhere else. Somewhere away from all the fast pace and woes of my drab everyday being. I hear sounds from neighbors going about their weekend tasks. To my left are the Swansons and their bright shiny new car, and on my right the Millers who are remodeling once again. Here I sit, once again wishing for something.

What If?

Gazing out across the newly trimmed lawn, I take in the fragrance of the blooms, the aroma of newly cut grass, and see the butterflies flitting about. Their wings glistening in the radiant beams from the sun above. How lovely it all seems. All of this beauty yet I sit wishing for something.

What If?

I find myself raising up from the patio chair, and making my way into the yard. My bare-feet are tickled by the grass clippings, and as a child I gently kick some of them and watch them fall aimlessly back to rest. The aroma fills my senses with comfort, and I curtsey to a nearby butterfly. Which appears to curtsey back before descending on the next bloom.

I ease my self down on the luscious green turf. The rich green velvet blanket acts as a mattress. I lay stretched out with hands and arms folded behind my neck, eyes closed, picturing myself floating up, up and away. Away from here, wishing for something.

What If?

Slowly I open my eyes. Above me, such a gorgeous blue sky highlighted with a few wisps of clouds. I feel as if I could reach out and touch the clouds in all their softness and airiness. The blue of the sky, like an inkwell to dip a pen into and write that I am here. There is a slight breeze stirring the fragrant mix of flowers and grass. I'm totally fixated on the sky and all its grandeur. All of this around me, yet wishing for something.

What If?

Suddenly there is a change to the breeze, I feel chilled. What on earth are you thinking! Look around you! All this beauty and tranquility. What if it were not here to enjoy as you have just done?

What if ?

I came to the realization that I have my health, sense of smell, touch, and the ability to relax. These are what are important, not the what ifs. To be able to relax and drift off long enough to understand that my afternoon was more precious and full-filling than a new car or a remodeling project would ever be to me.
