Saying I love You

When someone says they love you, what do they mean?
When someone says they love you, how should you feel; and how do you know it’s real?

For a long time I did not know, for a long time I have searched for the answer, and for a long time my heart remained empty, my mind remained empty, my soul remained empty…

Love, a selfless decision expressed with compassion, a selfless decision expressed with compassion…

The answer is simple now, if only I’d known how those three little words could make your heart skip a beat, how those three little words could make you feel as if you were the only two people in the entire world.  How those three little words could make you feel complete; make you feel whole.

When someone says they love you, what do they mean?  I can’t say for certain, but I do know what I mean.  I mean that you are the closest thing to my heart; I mean that I trust you with my heart, that you will be a part of my life forever.  I mean that I trust you with the little girl on the inside, that you will nurture her, care for her, console her, and protect her.  I mean that I can feed off of your strength, your ambition.  I mean that I value your heart, your mind, your spirit…in essence—you.  To know that with you on the other end of the phone, without saying a word…that everything will be okay, that is an expression of compassion.

When someone says they love you how should you feel; and how do you know its real? Again I don’t know for certain, but I do know how I want you to feel.  I want you to feel protected. I want you to feel secure, I want you to feel as if there are no barriers, and I want you to know that there is no need to hold anything back.  That you can be open… honest… limitless.  I want you to feel supported; I want you to feel that if you wanted to change the world, that we could do it together.

How do you know it’s real?

Because when your eyes meet theirs…when you’re wrapped in one another’s embrace…that’s the only thought running through your head…
