Poem about a creature on a killing rampage |
The Belldecopede Struggling in the water, splashing with fear Shouting for help, from anyone who is near “Hey you in the boat, over there, please help me!” “There are monsters, underneath me, here, in the sea!” “Get me out of the water now!” he screamed He felt something touch him, almost like electricity, it seemed Then again, he felt a shock on his leg and then, in his side. Under the water he went, there was nowhere to hide Wrapped in some sort of bonding, the man struggles for his life Reaching down with his left hand, to his pocket, to retrieve his penknife Still underwater he reaches his blade, and attempts to cut free This hostile life form stabs his victim in the knee As it wraps itself around him, the man looks his captor in the face. This peculiar life form opens its mouth wide and consumes him without a trace. Meanwhile back at the surface the man in the boat just sits and stares. As bubbles fade away and disperse, like no one really cares. “What the…what was that? I really do need to investigate more,” Having already weighed anchor he made his way through a small door Behind the door was a small room full of electrical equipment The kind of stuff you would see on boats, used for experiments He switched on the monitors that lit the room with the cathode ray light He was desperate to find out what dragged the man out of his sight Blips could be seen on monitor one, many could be detected He switches the underwater camera on he saw part of the sea was infected At first he noted blue glowing lights heading towards his boat “This is no ordinary marine creature!” he scribbled in his notes “A most unusual thing that I have ever seen!” he went on to write, “Having their very own lights, changing from blue to green to red then white.” Staring at the screen, bemused and amazed by what he saw Making notes all the time…. “Ten legs they have with very large claws!” “The body is shaped like a bell, you would see hanging on a Xmas tree.” “Four long tentacles it has on its head, which sway with the under current of the sea.” “On closer inspection,” he writes “the creature has two eyes and a very large mouth.” The monitor behind him blips, there are more coming from the south. “Oh my God!” he writes in his journal, “I feel like I am being surrounded!” “My boat is rocking and is being heavily pounded!” “I hear knocking and rumbling it feels like my boat they are boarding!” “It sounds to me like they are ripping off the boats hoardings.” “I see one now, it’s stood in front of me, and it must be seven feet tall!” “I can see it through the window, not the large one, the one that’s small.” “I have to give this thing a name.” He finally concedes. “Bell shaped body and ten long legs, I know! I will call it Belldecopede!” “My pencil is broken; it may be the last thing I ever write.” “I feel I will breathe my terminal breath tonight” “The creature has entered my room, boy, I am scared!” he stammered into his Dictaphone “Its mouth is opening so wide, and its tentacles are coming towards me, I feel so alone.” “Its mouth, its mouth, argh! Ouch! that felt like an electric shock” “One of its tentacles!” he shouts, “gave me a sudden knock.” “Its grabbed hold of me, I feel I cannot move; the electric shock has me paralyzed!” “Argh!” he shouts, its mouth is like a cavern, he screams, as he is terrorised” That is the very last message we get for sure As the boat owners Dictaphone falls to the floor Later, much later in the year as an investigation pursues In a room on the top floor of a London mews A group of people huddle around a desk in conversation The group is a secret government agency, in a very secret location “Sir, that’s all we have, it’s the last of the notes and final words on tape.” “It appears the man on the boat had no escape.” “Thank you, David,” said the man in the long white coat. “We will file it under, unsolved mysteries and missing power boats” Do you know of anyone who has seen these creatures? Do they have something that they could teach us? About the undiscovered depths of the worlds Oceans Or, are they an alien life form with grandiose notions. C. Paul Reynoldson 2007 |
