this is a poem i wrote during my piligimage to Uluru in April.
Nyuyni: Aboriginal word

Meeting people for the first time
Nervous, scared, unsure
Don’t know what to say;
Don’t want to sound stupid
First conversations, always the hardest,
Little embers like a fire start to form

Friendships are building;
The embers are getting stronger
We are coming together,
Forming a community,
And a family

As we make our journey to the heart
We are getting closer, bonding.
There are times when you are thinking,
What am I doing here?
Then you look around and see everyone,
All there for you if you need it,
There for a talk, for a laugh,
For anything

Now at the heart
Our fire is great and burning,
Until we meet the other pilgrims,
It feels like water on a burning fire.
Time to build the fire all over again,
It’s hard, but very much worth it.

Coming home is hard and
at the same time it feels great to be home.
Hard because you’ve left the fire,
People around you are different,
Have different perspectives on life,
They don’t understand the importance of the trip.
They don’t know that,
You see the world through different eyes.

Our friendships are now great burning fires
This is how they will stay forever,
This is the experience of Nyuyni.
