Sleepless Night

Eyelids lay heavy upon tired eyes
A whisper of breath distinct as it sighs
A bone-weary body ill at ease

Thoughts tumble past in silent interaction
Fast-paced and lacking any direction
Hindered by an energetic mind

Before minds eye a flash of memory
A thought painful in its reality
A memory best left forgotten

But it lingers gnawing at self-control
The constant hours begin to take their toll
On a restless soul in need of sleep

Tangling of sheets and flushes of heat
The pulsing of a powerful heart beat
Torture in the middle of the night

Agitated while the night demons throng
Until the birds begin their morning song
And weary eyes greet the waking world
