A battered wife creates a fantasy world to escape her terrible life. |

First Place Winner of Lexi's Poetry Challenge #40 Garden Of gems She strolls among trees draped in gossamer veils colored in, red, orange, yellow, and blue. As their delicate branches, caress the earth in a kiss, she follows the path of colored stones, and walks silently, listening for sounds of life, and love. Her heavy heart beats to the rhythm of the Healie Bird's warble, whose sensuous song draws her closer with its soothing sound. She fears neither ghosts, nor the living, in this place of safety created by the image displayed behind her half-closed eyes. In reality, she is afraid, afraid of everything. So she created this fantasy world of beauty and happiness, with no fears and no bitter memories. It is a place of peace and harmony where freedom reigns and pain is but a distant illusion tucked away on a foreign shore. Upon reaching the end of the stone path, her delicate hand slides into her pocket. Hundreds of tiny white pebbles appear glistening through her long slender fingers. One-by-one, she carefully tosses them in front of her. Upon touching the rich earth, they bloom instantly into a profusion of glittering colorful stones. With each toss the heaviness in her heart lightens. Each beautiful gem scattered along the pathway, has become her sanctuary, where the terrors of her life while here are but a distant illusion. Here in her 'Garden of Gems' she lives free, free from the reality of the tortured life she lives beyond her sanctuary, if only...for a moment. |
