“You sure you’ll be alright?”
“Yes, Dad, I’m positive.”
He looked at me seriously, but knowing I wouldn’t have responded any other way. A sigh left him. His graying hair always escaped my notice until something made me remember his age. I can’t believe my mother hadn’t realized in her years of marriage to this very man that he had wolf eyes – blotted blue and brown. A strong face with strong features and a bulky body. He was wishing we both would lose weight.
“Misery loves company.”
I smiled, “Unless that company is little Miss Rainbows herself. ‘It could be worse, we could have no arms, or legs, or eyes!’ I added sarcastically, a high-pitched girl voice masking my normal tone.
My father scoffed at my antics as I got out of the car. I walked past the door for the backseat and opened it halfway to interject a farewell into the mist of my brothers bickering.
Back at Mom’s, for the night.
Just me, as usual.
I could hear the car engine purring as it waited. My Dad always needed to watch me get into the house. He acted like it was some kind of ghetto neighborhood. I haven’t yet in the five years of my residence encountered any sort of trouble, not that it mattered to his worried father heart.
My glasses fogged up in the humidity of the Florida air. Disgusting air, that is. I always put myself in these fake but dire situations, and this was just the moment for one of those. Me, fogged up glasses, and a mugger. Could I defend myself? Well, I would damn sure try.
One day it’s really going to happen. One moment will come where I have to make a split-second decision. Until then, I’ll sit here worrying about it.
