A little girl and a skunk meet. |
STINKY, SMELLY, BLACK AND WHITE Chloe was walking down a rocky path one afternoon. She could hear the birds singing. The frogs in the roadside pond were crocking. “What is that I smell?” thought Chloe. She looked down at her feet. She looked up at the sky. She looked in the pond. She did not see anything that could smell that badly. So Chloe then started to skip on her way to see Minnie. Minnie was her best friend in the whole wide world. Chloe then felt something soft and furry rub her foot. She stopped to see what it was that had touched her. “Oh my, oh my!” declared Chloe. “It can’t be. It can’t be!” Chloe yelled. “It’s a skunk, a black and white skunk,” she said out loud. “Mr. Skunk, is it you that smells so badly?” asked Chloe. “Yep, it must be you,” she thought. “Should I run?” she wondered. “Should I pet him on the head?” she asked herself. She thought about it for just a minute and decided to stay right where she was. She was sure the skunk would move along pretty soon. Chloe began singing to herself. She hoped the singing would make him afraid. She thought he would go on down the pathway. Finally, Chloe stepped to the right. Mr. Skunk moved to the right. Chloe stepped to the left. Mr. Skunk moved to the left. “Whatever should I do?” Chloe asked herself. “Okay, so you want to play a game with me, Mr. Skunk” Chloe decided. So Chloe moved backward. Mr. Skunk moved forward. She stepped forward and Mr. Skunk stepped backward. “Hey, this is fun,” Chloe thought. Chloe and Mr. Skunk repeated their stepping game over and over. Now Chloe was too tired to go on to Minnie’s house. “At first I was afraid of you, Mr. Skunk,” Chloe told him. “You smelled badly, but now you are a friend,” she said. “I love your black and white fur,” she said. “I’ve got to go home now, Mr. Skunk,” she told him. “I hope we meet again to play,” she added. As Chloe turned and started to walk home, she felt good. She had made a new friend. One can’t judge a friend by how they look or how they smell. God made all of us and he loves us just as we are. |
