An Interview with Dave-Insomniacs Unite!

> 1. Where were you Born?Was your childhood good or bad?

I was born in Spirit Lake, Iowa. I was an only child and a latch-key kid growing
up. I would say that there were good and bad moments to my childhood. I spent most of my
years growing up in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

> 2. Married? Single? Male or female? (I like to be sure. You would be surprised the

I am male and single. I have never been married.

> 3.When did your interest in writing start? Why?

Reading and writing have been a fascination with me since I can remember. Some
of my fondest and earliest memories were of my mother reading letters from my grandmother
to me when I was around 3 years old. I used to try and read them myself. I have actually
been writing since I was around 5-7 years old. It is something that has always been a
passion with me.

I am 37.

> 5. What is the most important thing you want to say in your writing?

That depends. In poetry, I generally try to capture a moment in time or an
emotion and put words to it. In short stories, I generally try and tell a story that
somewhat comentates on lessons I have learned in life and at the same time
entertains.

> 6. What is your sun sign?
> (Don't laugh.)

I am a Capricorn.

> 7. What are the first three things on your "Must Do before I
> depart this Earth' List?

1)Own a home.(done)
2)Publish a novel.(working on it)
3)Travel the world. (my goal for retirement)

> 8. Do you have pets? If so what.

Yep. I have a dog named Anakin. The irony is, I am a huge Sar Wars fan, but I did
not name the dog. He was adopted and already had the name. Is that not poetic
justice?

> 9. What are your passions in life?Hobbies,etc.

1)Reading and Writing.
2)Investing.
3)Landscaping.
4)The search for a good cup of coffee.
5)History.
6)Movies.
7)Comic Book collecting (I haven't for years, but I still have my childhood collection.)
8)Music.
9)Thinking. I try and spend some quality time just thinking without distraction.
10)Art. I love all forms of art. Which you can probably see as most of my hobbies and
interest stem from some form of art or another.

> 10. What books have you read that really stayed with you and why?

Ok, now this is a juicy question. I am afraid this will be a long answer.

Childhood:

1)The hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. It was the very first 'adult' novel that I read when I
was 7 years old. It has inspired every aspect of my life. I could go on and on about just
how wonderful this story is, but I think most people already know that.

2)The Thomas Covenant series by Stephen R. Donaldson. These are the books that I read
right after 'The Hobbit.' I read them shortly after I got out of the hospital from my
first ear surgery.

3)The Lord of the Rings trilogy from J.R.R. Tolkien. I know it's wierd that I read
something else between 'The Hobbit' and these, but I read what I want, when I want. What
can I say? I never thougth that any character could rival my affection for Bilbo, but
Frodo managed it. He is the model for many of my convictions to this day.

4)Dune by Frank Herbert. This book, and series are just phenomenal. I hope one day to be
able to write a story that rivals the depth of his series.

5)The Elric Chronicles by Michael Moorcock. So many of my own character flaws are
mirrored in Elric, I felt like I was discovering myself while reading these books.

Adult:

1)The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene. I wanted to hate this book. I wished with a
fervent passion that I had not picked this book up in Senior AP English. But, in the end,
I am glad that I did.

2)Oedipus the King by Sophocles. Wow, for such an old story it still packs a punch.

3)Hamlet by Shakespeare. I never thought that I would enjoy any of his books, but I was
wrong. I have yet to meet a story by him that I have not liked. It was tough to choose
between Hamlet and Othello, but I had to go with my first exposure to Shakespeare.

4)The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. He is probably one of the more inspirational
writers of this century on my writing.

5)Robert Frost. No book, no specific poem. I cannot pick any one particular work or
favorite. I love his poetry.
