An English project putting us somewhat in Job's (from the Bible) place, modern-day.
I only slept for one short while
Not expecting a flame beguile,
Soon I awoke to horror there,
An inferno shot everywhere.
One night, one night when fire did reign,
Is the one night I see insane,
The tall flames danced and mocked me so,
All to carelessness, this I owe.
My house lies now in black ashes,
My clothes, bed, and once-great caches,
What I had been keeping now gone,
All I do is look up and moan.
I question God, “What have I done?
I never went astray or wrong!”
But the more I think of it all,
God did not make my one house fall.
Such trickery the Devil plays,
I think back to the reddish blaze,
It was him the angel befallen
That took my place of calm dwelling.
I did blame God for this event,
And time I wasted, hours I spent
On merely weeping, losing faith,
Not even thinking I was safe.
I was blessed by God alone,
Assured exit my burning home,
I may not have my wants on earth,
But needs in Heaven I now birth.
