This is another page I wrote for The Story.
Everyday she cries. She floods herself to sleep every night. She clings to the thought that maybe she will see him one day. Maybe one day a woman will enter her room with a smile on her face. One day the dream of another will come.
He lays alone in his ditch he dug for himself. He thinks of it as his grave. He tries not to think about her; where she is, what she is doing, is she thinking of him? The more he thinks, the more he wants to cry. He tells himself that there is no point, no one can hear him. He wants to shed his chains of tears that hold him in his place, but can not find the strength.
She sees him in her mind. His face is as clear as when she saw him last. She can even smell his cigarettes and Versaci. She craved to smell him, not just his scent. She yearned to touch him, to tell him how scared she is. She fears no good thing will prevail. She writes on the walls with her invisible pen, keeping her words hidden within her heart. Her true words she will never reveal.
She goes back to the window. A tear falls as the light blinds her. She can feel the warmth of the day reflected off the roof of the silver car. A silver car?! She sees the corvette. It had not been there before! Maybe it had but she could not see through the haze of her tears. It glistened in the sun the same way it did when she cruised down the highway. She wanted to be in that car, to be free. She didn't know where she was, but she knew she did not want to be there.
She imagined sitting on the Corvette, windows down, top back, tires spinning. But, that was all she could imagine. She pushed herself to picture him sitting next to her, smoking his last cigarette. She looked to her right, but the seat was empty. She cried because he was not there. She couldn't even put his face in view. She could no longer smell the smoke, she could no longer feel the air whipping her hair back.
She sat up, as if in a daze, as if from a dream. Had she been dreaming this whole time? She looked around the room. She now had furniture where emptiness had been before. There was a mirror against the wall. She looked into it, but saw no reflection. She screamed, but no sound came out. Everything went black.+
