A sample of a future work in progress |
The Defender I'm not sure who I am or where I came from. Prejudice against me is not uncommon for I have been shunned by the majority of the city. I'm an outcast of society and yet I still make my presence within the city that hates me. The only thing I do know is that I am an elf, and my name is Rakesh. The reason for my existence I believe is that I must fight the demons of this town. I ask myself why I do this, why do I fend of the evil within the city and yet still I get persecuted for who I am. Perhaps it is because I am bound to this city with an intention to help those in need and maybe eventually not be hated. Or maybe it's because I have nowhere else to go. If you see me you'll notice first my clothing is black in appearance to camouflage myself in the night. My hair is brown and somewhat long and spiky, and I am most notable for the color of my skin; it is navy blue with black tribal tattoos running down my arms, and covers my chest and back. I don't know where these tattoos came from, but I feel they must be of some significance. When people look at me eye-to-eye they will notice my dark blue orbs with no iris or retina. My eyesight is extremely sharp, as I can see rats scurry around from my perch on this large building standing one-hundred stories high. At the sides of my hips are two swords that have a bluish tint on the blade; and on my back lies a great black sword, with which I use when I do not need speed as a factor in battle. I have finally come up with the answer that was so apparent the first time I asked myself the reason for my presence in this city. It is the reason the evil demons attack this city relentlessly. A great source of energy is to be had that lies in the underground below the sewers. The evil knows the energy makes its residence in this massive city with buildings scaling hundreds of stories high; but they don't know where it is located in the city. Only I do, and a few high ranking government officials know of this top secret energy source. I have come to the conclusion as to exactly why the people of the city hate me so much. They think that I want the energy source for myself, and want to use it for personal gain and power. On the contrary, if only people knew I too desire to defend the energy source with my life. I know that if it ever fell into the wrong hands not only would the city and I be crushed; but the whole world. It is amusing to me how so many different races make their homes in this city. Humans, elves, dark elves, dwarves, gnomes, giants, and mixed races of animal type species. Such a large city, with so many different types of beings; like a melting pot. My presence is known throughout the city quite well. I have befriended a few people, but as for the rest; well you get the idea. I'm the one known for the three blades. The solitary elf who works by night to keep this ungrateful city safe. Though, they post many guards around the main building where a secret entrance is located to the underground energy source. They do this not only to keep the demons away from finding the secret location, but also to keep me out. If I wanted to I could have the energy source in a matter of minutes. My fighting skills are faster and more powerful than that of the common guards of the city. I do not know where this knowledge of combat came from; maybe from long ago, but I do not recall my past. Rakesh noticed a pack of demons prowling around on the city floor. They move elegantly and quickly; few would have noticed them in the dark of night, but Rakesh could make out their forms' with his dark blue eyes. He then dove off the one-hundred story building. He was going to go head first into the ground. As he descended down quickly, he brought out his two swords located at his hips. They were of magnificent beauty, and their length was about 4ft. As Rakesh was about to hit the ground and destroy himself; he drove one of his blades into the side of the building he had so fearlessly jumped off of. This slowed down his descent and he landed on his feet elegantly. The technology of the building was an advancement common in this time. Like the human body, the deep gashes made by Rakesh's swords on the side of the building dissapeared; as if it was a wound that had just healed itself. The noise of the blades scraping down the building alerted the demons; they quickly prepared to attack this being that now made his presence in front of them. “Who are you?” one of the demons hissed. Rakesh responded by throwing the sword he had just pulled out of the building at the demon that had spoken. The impact and speed of the blade, cut into and killed the demon with ease. The other demons immediately began to rush him after the death of their comrade. This was a careless mistake on their part for he had fought many battles as this before. Rakesh ran at them as they ran at him. At the last second before the would collide; he leaped over the small group, slicing one of the demons with a quick strike. He quickly pulled the sword he had thrown at the demon out of the lifeless body. Rakesh then charged the pack of demons again, who were now down to only five. He made quick side stepping motions as he approached, and his blades sliced through the demons effortlessly. He had destroyed the demons without a single wound. These were the peons of the demons, the warm-ups. Rakesh knew that the demons would only get stronger as the night went on. He sheathed his massive sword and took his spot at the top of the building to keep guard over the night as he had done before. He then gazed up at the full, brightly lit moon, enclosed by the darkness of the cool night. Saying to the demon who he had slayed earlier, although the body lay lifeless many stories below, “I am Rakesh, the defender, keeper of the night. I will strike down those who care to take away the freedom of this city and the entire world by trying to obtain the great energy.” With every word he spoke; Rakesh could see his breath, for the temperature of the night had dropped quickly. Rakesh looked over and saw a close by building about forty feet away from the where he currently stood. He began sprinting toward the long, deep gap. Although it was a forty foot gap, Rakesh jumped to the other rooftop effortlessly and elegantly. He then stood watch over the city in the black of night from his new perch. |
