Marriage is...
A union of mind, body and spirit.
A bond that turns two into one.
One so strong, it cannot be undone.
The blessed joining of two souls.
Each one was a half
that will now become whole.
A promise to God
before family and friends
of a love everlasting
and true till the end.
A vow that is made
to have and to hold
it is sealed with a kiss
and a circle of gold.
Written about 12 years ago as part of a gift for a friend's wedding. I had the poem put onto a plaque that had two rings (two "circles of gold") on it. I gave them the plaque as part of their shower gift. They loved it and asked if they could use the poem in their wedding pamphlets that were handed out at the church. The guests loved it! I was so happy to give them something unique and personal to celebrate their joyous union.
This poem was published in an anthology in 2002.
Entered in Poetry's Prism weekly contest for the week of 4/15/2011 to 4/22/2011. It came in second place!
