A short story about revenge and regret. |
Nothing The taste of metal perforated my senses in the slow motion time lapse of my old Ford being t-boned by the Kingswood Ute. Blood and bone splattered over my sight as the passenger and his side of the car warped its way into my space. We grinded sideways then came to a silent halt. I watched, from where I was pinned in the wreck of the old Ford, as the driver of the Kingswood crawled out of his window. Beside me a lifeless body, seat belted into the passenger seat, is now hard up against me. I had done it and there was no turning back. The lifeless body was the lifeless body of the low life prick that was fucking my girlfriend. The cocky bastard didn’t give a shit whether I knew or not. My offer to give him a lift was accepted without any perceived risk or suspicion on his behalf. I was so fucked up and twisted by the torture of their infidelity that I had no concern for my own safety, just a strong desire for revenge no matter what the cost. Blood was everywhere, not knowing whether it was his or mine, I didn’t care, I sat numbly as the Kingswood driver tried in vain to open the side door. I looked at him blankly as if starring at a T.V. He shouted through the closed window, his lips moved but made no sound. It was my apathy that caused her to seek desire elsewhere. At least that’s what she told me when I finally got her to admit to it after a year of denial. I was paranoid she said, and that I was imagining things. She said it with enough persuasion to make me doubt my own intuition. I was at my wits end and had to act. He was a smiling lying bastard who taunted me knowing I wouldn’t fight him. I had planned this day, running it through my mind over and over until now at its fruition. Lost in a feeling of completion and guilt but still somehow justified I struggle for my own survival as the Kingswood man backs away from our petrol leaking wreck. I wonder where she is and how she is going to react to the news of my destruction. I can hear sirens in the distance as the smell of petrol becomes intoxicating. A touch of reality starts sweeping through me wondering where I am and what have I done. After all was I any better than this prick? Had I not treated previous girlfriends the same. Meeting others secretly behind their backs and the backs of their boyfriends. Through the gurgling of blood soaked airways the lifeless body beside me suddenly gasps a breath of life. A sense of relief passes over me as I realise I hadn’t killed him. The sirens are getting closer as I try to move myself without much success. I am jammed tightly up against the door and my feet are sandwiched between the peddles. I struggle to free myself now almost in a panic. He is trying to say something but all I can here is a gurgling mumble. I reach my hand around to hold his head up. He is covered in blood and his eyes are dark red. I can almost decipher what he is trying to say in between gasps and gurgles. “I …. am……sorry.” The sirens are now upon us and I can see people milling around at a distance looking stunned. Amongst the crowd I see her staring in disbelief. Our eyes meet and she starts moving towards the car. The ambulance screeches to a halt nearby as I make another effort to free myself. The fumes in here are now stealing my breath. One foot slides free of the pedals, smashing up into the twisted dash. Suddenly the interior of the car becomes ignited with flame. I can see everyone backing away horrified. The car fills with smoke and the smell of melting flesh, his screams become distant to me. I feel nothing, like a dream; everything is in slow motion as all I see fades into a dot then disappears. No pain, no noise, Nothing. |
