A short children's poem that I composed years ago. Just thought that I would post it.
In a grassy, green meadow of storybook time
Lay a pond in reflection, in a forest of lime.
It sat, ever peaceful, feeding the thirst
Of all the wood’s creatures, from the best to the worst.
Then one day the forest around came alive,
With excitement from what was about to arrive.

The birds they were quiet, the rabbits stood still
And the deer ceased their grazing and drinking until
The tree branches parted! There a horse with a horn!
Most majestic of creatures a white Unicorn!
Oh honor to see what the impure cannot!
The deer quickly vanished to offer their spot

The creature walked slowly to where they had stood
In the sun she was white! No stain from the wood
She lowered her head, and drank from the pool
Refreshing her heart with water so cool.
And the Unicorn rested there for a time
By a pond in reflection in a forest of lime.

She remembered back from the eldritch years
When all such as she could live without fears
Many such as she had walked the lands then
Before all the hunts, the hounds and the men
While she sat she remembered and she wished and she cried
For she had not a friend or a love left alive.

Then, just as she’d entered the meadow in silence
A great head arose and roared out with violence
The tree’s branches shook, the birds flew away
And the rabbits made swift for they wouldn’t stay
And the Unicorn looked at the leathery beast
That had come to the pond, whom the forest released.

She stood and regarded the magnificent thing
Who’s roar had just caused her pure ears to ring
And in smoke and in flame the creature unfurled
Its massive green wings and showed to the world
The thing, which was Dragon who’d, lived for all time
Near this pool in reflection, in this forest of lime.

The dragon was long; his tail ten times a man!
And as tall as a house by the pond did he stand
But the smoke and the fire that came from his nose
Did not frighten the Unicorn who stood in repose
And the Dragon fell silent and lowered his head
And turning away, great Dragon tears shed

For the Unicorn remained and was so unafraid
Despite his fierce countenance she drank and she stayed
And he looked at her beauty and fell so in love
That the smoke and the fire from his nose to above
Disappeared and relented! He stood in the light
Without his dark vapor imitating the night

In confusion and wonder he spoke aloud then
For the first time in years since the days of the men
“Why do you stay, and not turn to flee?
Why are you not frightened by a creature like me?”
And the Unicorn thought for a moment in time
By the pond in reflection in the forest of lime

Then she looked on his face and walked slowly near
And spoke “For I know you are nothing to fear.
There under your smoke, no monster does hide
And a beast such as me can look deep down inside
To the heart of all things and see to the truth
I have seen past your fire, your claw, and your tooth”

And the Dragon in shock took a drink from the pool
And saw his reflection on the water so cool
No villain was there nor a demon nor freak
But a shining great Dragon rather timid and meek
The sun fell upon him then, shining anew
And his beauty thereof was grand and was true

Next the Unicorn therewith walked up to his side
And with greatest care touched Alacorn to his Hide
Then she cried for she new that he loved her indeed
And she new there was one just like her ‘twas in need
For they both had lived all alone for a time
Near the pond in reflection, in a forest of lime

The Unicorn spoke ever so softly aloud
That the Dragon himself of his love should be proud
For she felt likewise towards him, she loved him as well
And asked that together for all time might they dwell
The Dragon’s great tail encircled the pair
And they rested together in the love that they shared

The day went by quickly, its sun changed to moon
And the timid forest animals soon played a new tune
For they saw the great Dragon and his white Unicorn
Lying peacefully sleeping, a new love was born!
And the birds came and sang, and the rabbits they played
Straight through the sweet night; Straight on into day

The Dragon and Unicorn still remain loves
And they care for each other with the fondness of doves
The men venture not near the woods where they are
And all animals reside here from near and from far
Here the two dwell in peace for all time
By that pond in reflection in that forest of lime.
