I turned to walk away. A break up. I knew it was coming, but not so soon. |
Chapter One I remembered what had happened the previous night... "Shannon? I... have to tell you something." "What is it? I'm busy." "I... I need a break." "A break? What break? What did I do?" "It's just that I need to study for the exams. And, our relationship isn't working. We should break up." I started sobbing. Life, without Jake, what was the meaning? I punched to pillow, willing it to bend and obey me. I knew it was coming, but not so soon. "Shannon? It's time for school." School. In school, I would have to hold back my tears, and that was something I could not do. And most of all, I would have to face Jake. " Shannon? What are you up to? I'm coming in." Charis sounded uncertain. I couldn't let her see me like this. I couldn't let down my youngest sister. " Nothing. I'm coming out." I pulled on my jeans and opened the door. " I'm fine. See?" I said brightly. "Yeah! Let's go to school." Charis held my hand and skipped along my side. I bit my lip. For her sake, for her sake, I reminded myself. As we stood, waiting for the bus, I remembered when I had met Jake here. He had stood by my side, laughed and joked with me. Even though he was a senior, and I was still a freshman, he treated me as an equal. And that was when we started dating. Tears streamed down my face. How could he do that to me? " Shannon? Don't cry. Are you tired?" Charis looked anxious. "It's the wind making my eyes water." I said wearily. The bus screeched to a stop. It was time to stop crying. Chapter Two I gazed out of the window as Mr. Louis talked about the play he had been so excited about. It was about some ancient mythological creatures that had fallen in love. " Jake? So, can you answer my question? When Paelinto broke up with Viviane, how did she feel?" Mr. Louis glared at me. I mumbled a pathetic answer of, "Sad." Mr. Louis shook his head as the class erupted into laughter. "Use words such as devasted or melancholy! But, nice try." He continued his daily drone. How would I know how Viviane felt when Paelinto broke up with her? How would I know about a Greek god when I didn't even know how Shannon felt when I broke up with her? She had just slammed down the phone when I uttered the four fatal words; we should break up. She hadn't even bothered to find out how I felt. Did she really think I wanted a break up? Did she really think I felt our relationship wasn't working? The questions buzzed round my head like a hive of angry bees. I remembered her tinkling laugh, her gentle touch. And I knew I would never, ever, feel them. Not again. Chapter Three The lunch bell rang. Kids scrambled to get in line and out of the classroom. Jessica headed to my table. "Shannon, come on. Let's go!" She said. I mumbled, " Go ahead. I'll catch up with you later." Her caramel brown hair swung forward as she bent down. " Shannon... There isn't anything the matter is there?" I shook my head, trusting myself not to speak. She sighed, and walked in her lilting way out of the classroom. I waited until everyone had left, and gathered myself. I walked out of the classroom, towards the cafeteria. I bumped into a boy, wearing a blue basketball sweater. "Sorry," I said, and caught sight of the name inscribed on the sweater. Jake. I looked up. It was him. "Shannon, I have something to tell you." He said, catching hold of my hand. I responded," I think I've heard too much." I shrugged off his hand, and strode towards the cafeteria. When I looked into your eyes, I fell in love with you, But when I took another look, They became pieces of ice. When I looked into your eyes, I fell love, again, When I looked, once again, I told myself I couldn't let myself feel the pain. When you told me you wanted to break up, I told you it was only by luck, That we fell in love. Did you really believe that, Did you not see how sad I was? _____________________________________________________________________ Note: Hi! Sorry if it's really crappy. Will continue later. |
